The Coalition Government’s third term has got off to a rocky start following the realisation that their new religious freedom laws would necessitate the abolition of the close to 75 pieces of Islamophobic national security legislation passed since 2001.
The Government said their new religious discrimination bill would “make it unlawful to discriminate against people on the ground of their religious belief or activity”.
Prior to today, neither the Attorney-General Christian Porter nor the rest of the Cabinet had twigged that this would mean either the national security and immigration legislation they’ve engineered so carefully over two decades to target Muslims would have to be abandoned, or they’d have to let an oppressed homophobic national sports star and a muzzled multi-million dollar Christian lobby fend for themselves.
The PM admitted this was a real test for his government because it would force them to choose between the Liberal Party’s two most fundamental principles: demonising Muslims and dehumanising gays.
