This has led to immense public pressure to reform our dual citizenship laws.
Faced with the incredible climate leadership of 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on the one hand and the complete abdication of climate leadership from our major party politicians on the other, the nation’s voters have turned to Google to see if somehow we can get Greta into Kirribilli on May 18.
In recent times millions of Australians have become increasingly impressed by Thunberg, increasingly disillusioned by the ecocidal or seriously inadequate climate policies of the major parties, and increasingly freaked out by climate change.
In this context, statements by the young climate leader to Extinction Rebellion protesters and MPs in the UK have prompted frantic online research into our dual citizenship laws preventing Australian politicians from also being citizens of other nations.
“This ongoing irresponsible behaviour will no doubt be remembered in history as one of the greatest failures of humankind.”
“You lied to us. You gave us false hope. You told us that the future was something to look forward to,” she said. “You don’t listen to the science because you are only interested in solutions that will enable you to carry on like before.”
“The UK’s active current support of new exploitation of fossil fuels, like for example the UK shale gas fracking industry, the expansion of its North Sea oil and gas fields, the expansion of airports, as well as the planning permission for a brand new coalmine, is beyond absurd.”
“I’m sure that the moment we start behaving as if we were in an emergency, we can avoid climate and ecological catastrophe. Humans are very adaptable. But the opportunity to do so will not last for long.”
"For way too long the politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything at all to fight the climate crisis and the environmental crisis but we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer."
"We will never stop fighting for this planet, and for ourselves, our futures and the futures of our children and grandchildren."
While the dual citizenship laws were popular when they got rid of Malcolm Roberts and gave us a temporary reprieve from Barnaby Joyce, the fact that they are now denying Thunberg her rightful place as Australian Prime Minister has sparked nationwide calls for imminent change.
