This morning Situation Theatre's Liam McLoughlin and comedy producer James Woods released their answer to the call for more systemic satire in Australia.
Death by Civilisation is a radical new take on the satirical news show. Wholly independent, it's a unique blend of comedy and investigative journalism that digs beneath the day-to-day news cycle and takes aim instead at systemic injustice.
We care very little for the "news" that Tony Abbott fails to properly prepare his onions but succeeds in rapidly consuming liquid. The man satirises himself.
We care much more about why governments are locking up refugees, closing Indigenous communities and overheating the Earth on our behalf.
Each episode a different host will take a critical look at a contemporary social issue with humour more biting even than Bill Shorten's zingers.
Episode One tackles all the bells and whistles of Anzac Day. An occasion designed for quiet reflection on the contributions of our soldiers and the futility of war has morphed into a carnival of clichéd rhetoric, crass commercialism and aggressive nationalism. With the help of pom poms, Le Snaks and a BBQ, we take on these forces and offer alternatives for a very different kind of Anzac Day.
