Unlike the many solid arguments against Peter Dutton’s baseless scaremongering, there are no valid refutations to this entirely legitimate claim.
The nation’s doctors have raised concerns that Liberal and National MPs are taking up the precious little space available in Australia’s Parliament, displacing other more deserving Australians.
Yesterday the head of the Australian Medical Association Dr Tony Bartone told Australians they “should be angry” about the prospect of missing out on democracy.
“I don’t want to see Australians who’ve been waiting years for a genuinely representative democracy kicked off the waiting list because Coalition MPs are clogging up the system.”
“If you bring hundreds and hundreds of people from the Liberal and National Parties into Canberra, it means citizens who could be serving the needs of the Australian people are displaced by self-aggrandising ideologues only interested in serving themselves and the needs of big corporations.”
“People should be very angry, because this comes at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. If you’re accommodating Liberal and National MPs in hotels in Canberra, it comes at a significant cost,” he said.
St Vincent’s Health, Australia’s largest Catholic non-profit health organisation, has publicly backed up that assessment, saying “It’s just simple maths”.
“If we’re going to bring more conservatives into Canberra, then obviously they’re going to take the place of people who might actually believe in science, reason, and the ongoing survival of humanity.”
