Australia still shocked after watching one of our favourite sons suffer a devastating blow on Saturday.
How can life go on? One minute, you’re safe in the knowledge that no matter how grim life becomes, you know Adam Giles is somehow making it worse for Territorians. The next minute, that stalwart of ineptitude, blame shifting and callous indifference is gone and you can barely breathe for the grief.
Many Australians will struggle to pick their favourite “Gilesy” moment, and how can you choose with so many dizzying highs?
Was it when he said in Parliament “If I was the prisons minister, I would build a big concrete hole and put all the bad criminals in there. ‘Right you are in the hole, you are not coming out, start learning about it'. I might break every United Nations convention on the right of the prisoner, but ‘get in the hole’.”
Was it when as Chief Minister he ignored overwhelming evidence of system abuses inside the NT prison system and instead pushed for tougher measures?
Was it when he approved mechanical restraint chairs and spit hoods for children?
Was it when he was voted out by his colleagues, refused to resign, and led the Country Liberal Party to a wipeout?
So many memories. Here’s a tribute to the great man. We’ll miss you Gilesy.
