Mr Dutton thinks allowing refugees access to boats would send the wrong signal to people smugglers.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has launched a scathing attack on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after their decision to allow 10 refugee athletes to compete as an independent team in the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The Minister is gravely concerned that refugee participation in rowing, kayaking and sailing events will give the green light to people smugglers around the world.
Mr Dutton said “Our tough “Stop the Boats” policy has worked. The boats have stopped. Now suddenly we all have to sit idly by and watch refugees freely get on boats and arrive successfully at their destination? That’s so typical of Labor, but I expected better from the IOC.”
When told the athletes will only be competing in athletics, judo and swimming, Mr Dutton said cage fighting would be more appropriate.
