The former UN lawyer has taken a consistent moral position on this issue for years. This is not something the Labor Party can afford.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has jumped on the fact that Labor’s candidate for the WA seat of Curtin, Melissa Parke, has stepped aside after reports she told a public meeting that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians was “worse than the South African system of apartheid”.
Ms Parke has 20 years’ experience in international relations and law including living and working in the Middle East.
Mr Morrison said “That kind of expertise on the issue you are talking about does not belong in Australian politics”.
