The self-described Opposition Leader paid his respects to John Howard yesterday for pioneering Labor’s contemporary approach to culture wars, tax cuts for the rich, climate inaction, sacrificing civil liberties, and torturing refugees.
As the parliamentary tributes poured in for former Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke yesterday, Anthony Albanese took the opportunity to thank the man responsible for most of Labor’s current positions: John Howard.
Whether it be Howard’s inspiring incantation of the word aspiration, his advancement of culture wars in lieu of an actual agenda, his relentless pursuit of trickle-down economics, his equivocation on climate change, his endless extension of national security powers and curtailing of civil liberties following 9/11, or his dogged support for refugee torture, Albo credited the longest serving Liberal PM since Menzies with blazing a trail for his time in Opposition.
ScoMo thanked Albo for his spirit of bipartisanship and said he looked forward to working together to advance Howard’s glorious legacy and to fight side by side against their common enemy: The Greens.
