With a long history of depicting Chinese men as sexual predators invading Australia to attack our virtuous white women, this nation is ready to teach China why an image referencing actual war crimes is problematic.
Sure, we were anti-Chinese racists before we were even a nation.
Sure, we instituted that racism as official government policy for most of the 20th century and unofficially ever since.
Sure, Sinophobia has in recent times overtaken cricket as our most popular national sport.
Sure, our politicians would have made McCarthy blush with their demands for Chinese Australians to denounce the Communist Party.
Sure, our elected leaders link China to Nazi Germany.
But the way that fake Chinese image highlighted the reality of Australian war crimes, well that’s beyond the pale.
