Immigration minister Peter Dutton says he has heard the calls for compassion of the #LetThem Stay campaign loud and clear. For this reason he is appointing a new Chief of the Border Force, former SS Unterscharführer, or junior squad leader, 94-year old Oskar Groening.
There’s a certain kind of Liberal logic to the move. In 2015, Groening was sentenced to four years in prison for 300,000 counts of accessory to murder. They are human rights abuses on a scale that as yet this government can only dream.
Dutton says “If you’re going to abuse human rights efficiently, you’ve got to seek out the masters. After that Operation Fortitude debacle last year, it's clear we really need a hard Nazi man to stand up to Twitter. By the same token, as an inmate himself, Groening will bring a lot more empathy than I can muster for the prisoners on Nauru and Manus.”
Groening will lead the Border Force from his German prison cell via Skype.
