There are shocking revelations out of Europe this morning that Angela Merkel based her entire approach to the latest Greek bailout talks on the torture scene from Return of the Jedi.
The German Chancellor let the tormented cat out of the bag when she was caught quoting the scene verbatim during negotiations. Denouncing the Greeks for violating the neoliberal ban on democracy with their referendum, she said “your feeble skills are no match for the power of the dark side".
Referring to the troika’s punishment of Greece for their attempts to reverse the devastating impacts of five years of austerity on employment, poverty, homelessness, suicide rates and health outcomes, she said “you have paid the price for your lack of vision.”
The German Emperor then rammed home the bald-faced plagiarism when she let slip “Now, young Skywalker, I mean Tsipiras, I mean Greek economy and society, you will die.”
Sadly that was as far as Merkel role played the scene.
