Another blow for climatology sympathisers this week as yet more scientists suffer in the world’s longest lasting exercise in collective self-harm. This time it was the turn of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a group of NASA funded numberbods to have their warnings of civilisational collapse and calls for urgent evasive action fall on deaf ears.
Bricklayer Roger Waters sees the limits of this evidence-based approach to tearing down the wall. He worries that relying on climate scientists to convince elite decision-makers to shift to renewables is just another brick in the wall, given vested interests in fossil fuel economies. He thinks the broader population will remain comfortably numb well beyond the climatic tipping points of no return, fearing this will be goodbye cruel world.
Demolition man Bill Mckibben suggests instead we engage in a justice struggle of creative direct action against suicidal projects of fossil fuel expansion slated to send the planet into ruin. He has ruled out cryogenic freezing as a viable campaign strategy.
