What fires?

Firefighters and fire-ravaged communities are breathing easier today as the Boxing Day Test between Australia and New Zealand got off to a compelling start, bringing much needed relief.

Prior to Steve Smith scoring a well-deserved 77 not out, it seemed like Australia might need a massive injection of firefighting resources, an urgent national fire summit, and radical climate action to confront the concurrent bushfire, smoke, drought, and heatwave emergencies smashing the nation.

But watching Smithy drive the ball to the boundary so beautifully as part of this great summer of cricket, it quickly became clear that such actions would be mere frivolities by comparison.
