Cutting Edge Cartoon Uses 19th Century Tropes To Depict Depth of Australian Racism

Meanwhile the gargantuan baby who drew the cartoon spits the dummy after yet another code violation.

The first two rules of satire are to target long-oppressed minorities and be heaps racist at all times. On that front, Mark Knight is the premier idiot-savant of Australian satire, and that’s against some fierce competition.

In response to the whole world issuing Knight with a code violation for his profoundly racist depictions of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka (innocent victims can only be white, remember?), the Herald-Sun cartoonist chucked a real tanty, insolently challenging the umpire’s decision.

“I’m upset that people are offended, but I’m not going to take the cartoon down.”

Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop. https://t.co/YOxVMuTXEC

The fact that Mark Knight is doubling down on his racist cartoon just goes to show how much black women have to fight for our right to be human.

Knight said his censure for an audacious level of racism was evidence “the world’s gone crazy” given that “It’s a cartoon about poor behaviour. It’s nothing to do with race”.

In the most heartfelt apology since Rudd said sorry then Australia created another stolen generation, Knight said,

“I’m sorry it was taken by social media and distorted so much.”

Fellow baby Michael Miller, Executive Chairman of News Corp Australasia, backed Knight.

“Criticism of Mark Knight's Serena Williams cartoon shows the world has gone too PC & misunderstands the role of news media cartoons and satire. Poor behaviour in any sport needs to be called out.”

Right on Michael, which is why when you could call out Indigenous incarceration rates, deaths in custody, the ongoing harms of the Northern Territory intervention, or the dismissal of the Uluru Statement, instead you boldly condemn a forward pass in the Broncos-Eagles game.
