The Australian Club, the oldest gentleman’s club in the Southern Hemisphere, located in a remote part of Macquarie Street, received a generous Federal grant to upgrade its female change rooms.
Compounding the news that North Sydney Pool received $10 million for a major redevelopment out of a Federal fund for female facilities in regional and remote areas, there are now revelations that an elite Sydney men’s club located in the Sydney CBD received a similar grant.
Literally now impossible to tell whether this is satire or not, the club, whose male only membership rules date back to 1838 when it first opened, received the money because its female toilets were apparently looking a bit shabby.
Renowned feminists and former Liberal Prime Ministers John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull are members of the club, and praised the grant as evidence of the Government’s fierce advocacy for gender equality and regional advancement.
