Mr Barry Bobby and his dog Buddy have swarmed the streets of the nation’s capital today after being inspired by the 2 million Hong Kong protesters who take their democratic rights seriously.
A retired public servant and his pet pug have registered their opposition to the erosion of Australia’s freedoms over the last two decades by surrounding Parliament House and demanding the government stop trading our civil liberties for Peter Dutton’s perverse pleasure.
While the response of Australians to the degradation of our democracy has been somewhat more muted than that of Hong Kong locals to the threats to their freedoms, it’s still been gratifying to see that at least one man and his dog are mad as hell at this government and they are not going to take it anymore.
If Greta Thunberg’s example is any guide, Mr Bobby’s actions could be the catalyst the general public needs for waves of civil disobedience to reclaim our democracy.
If the schedule for what’s streaming on Netflix in July is the more accurate guide, well, Goodbye Country (Hello Black Mirror).
