Federal MP Joel Fitzgibbon and Queensland Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk both said the Indian billionaire industrialist and chairman of the Ahmedabad-based multinational was a “true Australian hero”.

The state and national Labor parties have thrown their weight behind Gautam Adani’s bid to become the 2020 Australian of the Year following the election loss on Saturday.

On an appearance on 730, Mr Fitzgibbon said Adani richly deserved the award thanks to the tiny amount of jobs he hasn’t created, the national resource he hasn’t yet stolen, and the planet-destroying carbon bomb he hasn’t yet released.

Ms Palaszczuk said Queenslanders had had a gutful of hard-working Aussies winning Australian of the Year and that it was high time a few foreign billionaires had a fair go.
