The former represents the heartbreaking failure of regional forest agreements. The latter signifies a heart-warming punishment for six years of cruelty, corruption, and incompetence.
A recent Wilderness Society report has found 48 species of threatened forest-dwelling vertebrate fauna while recent polling has discovered one species of swamp-dwelling invertebrate fauna facing similar existential danger.
The Wilderness Society’s national forest campaigner, Peter Roberston, said “The report calls on the next Australian government to commit to a policy that no more of Australia’s unique wildlife species will be allowed to go extinct, and to ensure, backed by the necessary laws and resources, that this policy is fulfilled.”
On the other hand, the polling quoted one voter as saying “we call on the next Australian government to commit to a policy of never letting a band of nation-marauding sociopaths anywhere near the levers of power again”.
Australia has the highest rate of mammalian extinction in the world, but the country’s voters are optimistic that ironically, the extinction of one particular species of mammal, known by the Latin name “Liberalis Ministeris”, will slow this rate significantly.
