Step away from the parabolas. Say hello to Simone De Beauvoir.
We all know how useful higher level school maths can be. Whether I’m using quadratic equations to choose my breakfast cereal or finding the second derivative of my yearly income, I feel daily gratitude for studying HSC mathematics.
You’ll understand then why Maths boffins like myself are more than a little miffed to hear that Australian teachers will be teaching feminism more than formulas, Steinem more than standard integrals, and Angelou more than advanced trigonometry.
What possible relevance could systemic sexism, the objectification of women, capitalist oppression, the patriarchy and the link between gender inequality and violence against women have to our daily lives? Sounds like an esoteric waste of time, bring back the quadratic polynomial.
