What we say we do or don’t believe is purely a question of economics.
Deputy leader Richard Marles has fiercely defended the fundamental principles of the Labor Party by arguing they are all ultimately an issue for the market.
Challenged by David Speers on Insiders to take a position on new coal-fired power and new coal mines, Marles was quick to dismiss the absurd idea that his political party has any agency, power, or positions of their own.
In light of the biblical fires and floods which the climate emergency has unleashed across the country, it was reassuring to see one of the top shopfront mannikins of neoliberalism abandon our fates to the fossil fuel industry.
It was also a timely reminder of Gough Whitlam’s inspiring 1972 election slogan, “It’s Ultimately A Matter for the Market”.
