This coronavirus crisis really shows the suffering of private business under the increasingly burdensome laws and regulations of the government.

A righteous neoliberal man who is currently struggling to make ends meet as a Mosman-based stockbroker has spent the day scanning the 1168 pages Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged for the part where rugged individualism and the efficiencies of the free market save everyone from a pandemic and its associated economic collapse.

For the uninitiated, the novel follows railroad executive Dagny Taggart and her lover, steel magnate Hank Readern, in their struggle against “looters” who want to exploit their productivity. They join other business leaders in a strike of productive individuals against the looters and plan a wonderful new capitalist society based on reason and individualism.

Looking at the most pressing social problems facing us all in 2020, it’s easy to see that Rand really nails it.
