Morrison slammed the cigar-puffing Treasurer of the time, whose cavalier treatment of the car industry immediately preceded its death.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is absolutely furious with General Motors’ decision to axe the Holden brand but even more ropable with the leadership team whose refusal to subsidise car manufacturing in December 2013 resulted in massive job losses.

“I’m angry about the decision. I think many Australians would be. I just wish whichever administration replaced the Rudd Government in September 2013 had saved thousands of manufacturing jobs through subsidies the same way my Government has saved tens of jobs in the coal industry.”

“If only the Coalition had been in power back then, if only GM had given as much money to the Liberals as the fossil fuel industry, or even if only Holden had just rebranded as an Indian coal giant, of course we would have pretended to actually care about Australian jobs.”
