The theme of NAIDOC week is “Voice. Treaty. Truth”. The theme of the Liberal listening tour is “Trespassing. Illegally Camping. Dumping Rubbish”.
To signal his profound person commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has sent members of his party on a “listening tour” of Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.
The tour culminated yesterday with a Liberal Party meeting on top of Uluru. A debate about Indigenous recognition broke out between Liberal MP Ken Wyatt, who argued passionately for a bold policy of painfully slow minimal tokenism, and conservative MP Craig Kelly, who said acknowledging the existence of Aboriginal people was divisive.
The meeting on top of Uluru concluded by passing a motion to do better at listening to the heartfelt desires of Aboriginal communities.
