Why investigate the main causes when you can just exploit the whole process for political gain?
Hot on the heels of his announcement about a “practical” Royal Commission into the bushfires which will largely ignore the role of climate change, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a similar approach to the pressing issue of family violence.
"This Royal Commission accepts, it acknowledges, it understands the impact of violent men, more broadly, on the terrifying conditions that Australian women are living in," Mr Morrison said.
"What this Royal Commission is looking at are the practical things that must be done to keep Australian women safe. The focus here should really be hazard reduction – reducing the risk of such violence in the future not by tackling the actual causes but by addressing extraneous details like whether petrol caps have been properly secured and knives have been safely stored.”
Asked whether spending millions on a Royal Commission which will studiously ignore the key issues at stake was yet another cynical, criminal wasted opportunity to minimise harm, Mr Morrison said “It's important that we get this done quick because we need to ensure we at least appear to care about the weekly murders of Australian women.”
